State Rep. Bill Adolph, R-165, of Springfield, introduced legislation last week that would make self-employed corporate officers eligible for unemployment compensation.

Under House Bill 2031, a corporate officer deemed to be self-employed who becomes unemployed due to involuntary bankruptcy would be entitled to receive compensation, except where the officer sold or closed the business voluntarily.

“It is unfair that even though the wages of corporate officers are subject to unemployment taxes, they are not, in general, eligible for unemployment compensation benefits,” said Adolph in a release. “The reason for this is because of requirements of the Federal Unemployment Tax Act.

“Although we have to respect the federal law, my legislation would improve the fairness of the law by allowing corporate officers to be generally eligible for benefits.”

The bill, which is co-sponsored by state Rep. Tom Killion, R-168, of Middletown, is awaiting review by the House Labor Relations Committee.
